Some women just want to trim their hair short. It’s chic and needs little maintenance. But there are still more women who covet a long, healthy hair. Besides, it is a lure for many men. Long locks are exactly the opposite of a short hair — it requires a lot of attention and maintenance. The good news is that any woman can get gorgeous, long locks if they will it. It doesn’t take good genes to get them. It only takes a patience and handwork on top of a good hair care regimen. Here are important guidelines that will be very helpful in maintaining long hair.

Keep it clean and Well-conditioned

Shampooing and conditioning are two hair care basics. But it is not enough to have the right products. Having the right products is tantamount to doing it right. With long hair, shampooing and rinsing could be tiresome but crucial indeed. Depending also on the thickness, washing may take a five minutes or ages. But it is important to see it through and rinse properly or else , your hair will attract dirt quicker and cause product build-up. Conditioning is also very important as it repairs any rough edges of the hair strand, making it smooth and shiny for the rest of the day.

Washing need not be done every day unless you have to remove a lot of product. Especially if your hair is dry, wash your hair every other day for a natural shine and fullness.

Get a trim

No one finds those split ends and broken hairs sexy. None at all. In fact, it’s a mortal sin to your locks to leave them as they are. As your hair grows longer, it usually becomes weaker at the ends, hence the split ends and broken hair strands. The cuticle is the outermost layer that protects the inner structure of the hair. Harsh hair grooming, strong shampoos, constant dyeing, blow drying, etc., can cause the cuticle to wear away or fall off in the long run — resulting in hair breakage and split ends. Therefore, you need to trim your hair periodically before you make an ugly sight of it.

Brush it

Get a paddle or a boar bristle brush. These brushes work best on long, straight hair. Brushing stimulates the sebaceous glands into producing sebum, the skin’s and hair’s natural moisturizer. The paddle brush works wonders because it is designed to provide wide coverage and gives smoothness. The bubble tips can give you a soothing scalp massage, encouraging a good circulation to the hair follicles. Nothing is more beneficial than keeping your hair follicles in good condition if you want those tresses free from stresses.

When you brush your hair, begin with the tips then work on upwards to remove the tangles, which will essentially give you a hard time on the way if you begin at the top or base.

Use essential oils

If you think only expensive products can do the “mane” magic, then it’s time you drop the idea. As the cliche goes, the best things in life are simple. That goes well for your hair, too. At least thrice a week, massage your scalp with an essential oil that suits the kind of scalp you have (i.e. if it’s oily, dry, or normal). Try lavender oil if your hair is oily; rosemary oil for oily hair; and cedar wood oil for normal hair. Or you can just give avocado oil a shot. Avocado oil is packed with a variety of nutrients, making it an excellent treat for any type of hair.
